Dog parks are designed for both canines and humans of all ages to enjoy the moderate climate in a clean, open space. A dog park is where people can take their dogs to socialize, play, and exercise. All dog parks have some basic amenities, such as doggie bags, water fountains, and benches. Some locations may also have additional amenities like an agility course or swimming pool.
Here are tips on how to build a backyard dog park at home
1. Location:
Dogs need to be able to run, jump and climb. An ideal location for a dog park should be a level surface, such as a grassy area or an open field. A gate should provide access to the park with security bars. The length of the dog park should be measured from the gate to the farthest boundary, along with a width of at least 4 feet on either side of that point. A height of 3-4 feet should be maintained as well.
2. Planning:
In addition to measuring dog park size, it is essential to think about where you will place the structures needed for the dog park (i.e., any fencing or gates). The best location for a dog park is at the end of a field. An ideal location is on the edge of a property so that there is enough room for the dogs to run, jump, and climb around. Skateboard ramps are also helpful to make it more fun for the pups.
3. Dog Park Design:
Inexpensive dog parks can be created using considerable rubber mulch, small stones from a construction site, and various cones from recycled plastic soft drink bottles or aluminum cans. If you can access an area with land or outdoor space near your home, provide an outside fenced area instead, as it creates a safe place for dogs to play with their human friends.
4. Equipment:
Build a high dog table/platform that is sturdy, tall enough for your dog to take a good leap of faith, and sturdy enough that it won't tip over. The platform should be large enough for at least two dogs to lounge on or to stand on with the front paws hanging down while the animal remains standing if possible. Ideally, there should be at least one table or platform in the park for dogs less than one-year-old to use and another for larger dogs.
5. Water:
Dog parks require ongoing maintenance to keep them clean and sanitary. The best way to ensure that your dog's park stays clean is to provide water for your furry friends so they will use the bathroom nearby instead of on the ground. Include a water fountain with a hose that the dogs can play in.
6. Privacy:
Dogs can easily mark territory in their dog parks, especially if there are no people around. A fence around the park will help prevent other animals from coming in and helping themselves to a free lunch! It will also help keep stray cats out of the area, preventing undesired fights between dogs and cats.
